Almost 40 students were on campus Saturday for an invitational Science Olympiad. Dr. Kevin Ludwick, Assistant Professor of Physics, organized the event.
“This was an invitational tournament, meaning the teams paid to compete here as practice for a regional tournament,” he said. “Winning at the regional qualifies for the state level, and state winners go on to the national competition.”
About 40 students representing Fulton Science Academy and Decatur High School participated in events spread out around the campus.
“This was a small tournament to help us get our feet wet,” Dr. Ludwick said. “We hope to host the regional competition next year, and that will bring even more students.”
In general, a Science Olympiad tournament consists of 23 events ranging from chemistry, ecology, anatomy, astronomy, circuits, decryption, biology, geology, aeronautics and music.
“Some events required students to build their own musical instruments, protein model, car and ramp, airplane and more,” he said. “The winners don't receive a monetary prize – it’s just a nice addition to their resumés and the satisfaction of accomplishment.”
Anupa Doraiswami, state director of Georgia Science Olympiad (Division B), said she was very impressed with Saturday’s event.
“The tournament was meticulously planned by Dr. Ludwick,” she said. “It was well-organized, feedback from the teams was positive and we are happy to provide support for the next year. We are looking forward to continuing our association with LaGrange College and Dr. Ludwick.”

The annual Ash Wednesday worship service will be at noon Wednesday in the Chapel. Ash Wednesday is the traditional date on the Christian calendar that marks the season of Lent, a time of preparation, 40 days before Easter.

Beach Volleyball
The Panthers begin their inaugural season today (Friday) and Saturday at the Battle of the Bay in Waveland, Mississippi. LC plays Huntingdon in their first-ever match at 1:30 p.m. on March 6.
Softball
The Panthers open the 2020 season at the three-day Millsaps Tournament in Jackson, Miss. beginning Friday against Mississippi University for Women.
Men’s Lacrosse
The Panthers (1-2) beat Centenary 18-11 last Friday for their first ever win and lost to Hendrix 14-9 on Sunday. Freshman Robert Hunt had five goals and five assists in the two games. Hunt was named the men’s lacrosse USA South Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 16.
Women’s Basketball
The Panthers’ season ended with a 58-54 loss at Huntingdon on Wednesday in the first round of the USA South Tournament. Sadie Desroches and Jahpera McEachin each had 15 points to lead LC.
Men’s Basketball
The Panthers (7-17, 6-11 USA South) lost 73-66 at Huntingdon on Wednesday in a USA South game. Kyle Brown led three Panthers in double figures with 14 points.
Swimming
The Panthers men’s team finished second at the Sun Coast Conference Championship at the Columbus Aquatic Center last weekend. The team broke five school records at the meet. Sophomore Connor Cochran set four school records alone in the 500-yard freestyle, 400 individual medley, 1,000 freestyle, and 1,650 freestyle.
Men’s Tennis
The Panthers opened their spring schedule by going 1-2 at the Transylvania Invitational last weekend in Lexington, Kentucky. Freshman Daniel Vincent was 3-0 playing #2 singles. Vincent was named the men’s tennis USA South Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 16.
Women’s Tennis
The Panthers went 0-3 at the Transylvania Invitational last weekend in Lexington, Kentucky. Makayla Red led the team with a 2-1 record at #6 singles.
Baseball
The Panthers (2-4) beat No. 4 Birmingham-Southern 4-1 in Birmingham, Alabama last Sunday. McKinley Erves had two hits, including his first collegiate home run, to lead LC.
